What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a solution of exfoliating acids applied to the skin for a set time, then neutralised or removed. It loosens the bonds between dead and damaged surface cells so they shed, revealing newer skin underneath.
Peels range from light, superficial peels with minimal recovery to deeper peels that work further into the skin and need more recovery time. The type and strength chosen for you depend on your skin type, skin tone, concerns and history.
Concerns a peel may help with
Chemical peels may be discussed as an option for:
Pigmentation and uneven skin tone
Acne, congestion and post-acne marks
Dull or rough skin texture
Redness and sensitivity (select peels only)
What to expect
-
Areti reviews your medical history, current skincare and any medications, assesses your skin type and tone, and explains whether a peel is suitable, which type, and any alternatives. Some skin may need preparing with home skincare first.
-
The skin is cleansed, then the peel is applied and monitored throughout. Most people feel mild tingling or warmth, depending on the peel.
-
Redness, dryness and peeling are normal and vary with the strength of the peel. Lighter peels usually settle within a few days; deeper peels need longer. You’ll be given written aftercare instructions.
-
Lighter peels are typically done as a course of 4 to 6 sessions, 2 to 4 weeks apart. Deeper peels need fewer sessions with longer recovery between them. Changes develop gradually and are reviewed at each appointment. Individual results vary.

Risks and suitability
Common: redness, peeling, dryness, sun sensitivity and temporary changes in skin tone.
Less common: post-inflammatory pigmentation, infection, prolonged irritation and scarring. Stronger peels carry greater risk and longer recovery.
Suitability: some peels are not suitable for certain skin types or tones. Contraindications are assessed at your consultation.
All risks and your suitability are discussed in full at your consultation. If you have concerns after treatment, contact the clinic on 1300 851 708.
Chemical peel FAQs
-
Lighter peels are usually done as a course of 4 to 6 sessions, 2 to 4 weeks apart. Deeper peels need fewer sessions with longer recovery in between. Your plan depends on your skin and concerns, and is discussed at your consultation.
-
It depends on the strength of the peel. Lighter peels usually cause redness and light flaking for a few days, while deeper peels need longer to settle. You’ll need to avoid makeup for 24 hours and exercise, heat and swimming for 48 hours.
-
Most people feel mild tingling or warmth while the peel is on the skin. The sensation varies with the type of peel and is monitored throughout your treatment.
-
Peels may help improve the appearance of some types of pigmentation and uneven tone. Pigmentation has many causes, so it’s assessed first, and some types need a combined approach with home skincare and daily sun protection. Results vary between individuals.
-
Not every peel suits every skin type or tone. Some skin is more prone to pigmentation changes after a peel, so the type and strength are chosen carefully after a full assessment.
